On August 16, 2012, the board of the Appomattox River Water Authority decided to call for mandatory water-conservation measures, beginning August 23, in localities supplied by Lake Chesdin, a reservoir on the county line between Chesterfield and Dinwiddie counties. Lake Chesdin provides water to the counties of Dinwiddie, Prince George, and Chesterfield and the cities of Colonial Heights and Petersburg. The action follows the August 14 issuance by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality of a drought warning for the Appomattox River basin. The authority has called for voluntary conservation actions since June 26.
