FEMA Denies Virginia’s Appeal for Assistance Regarding April 2011 Tornadoes

On June 23, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) denied an appeal by the Commonwealth of Virginia for federal assistance to individuals affected by 34 tornadoes that struck the state between April 8 and 28, affecting particularly the counties of Pulaski, Gloucester, Halifax, Middlesex, and Washington.  Governor McDonnell filed the appeal on May 19, after FEMA’s initial denial of assistance.  The Commonwealth will now pursue Small Business Administration low-interest loans for affect homeowners, renters, and businesses.
