On August 7, 2013, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission approved a management plan for American Eel populations. Minutes of the Commission’s decision on this and other issues at its meeting August 6-8 in Alexandria, Va., are available online at http://www.asmfc.org/. Eel populations appear to have decreased in the past few years, according to an annual survey by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service is under a court order to decide by September 30, 2015, whether or not to place the fish on the federal Endangered Species list. The article linked below provides a detailed look at the fish and the issues surrounding it.
