The Coastal Blue Carbon Concept of Climate-change Mitigation Benefits from Coastal Wetlands – Information Sources as of June 2016

This information updates a May 20, 2014, post.

Coastal Blue Carbon is a term used to describe the climate-change mitigation benefits provided by coastal wetlands (including salt marshes, mangrove swamps, areas of submerged aquatic vegetation, and other habitats).

Information on coastal blue carbon is available from the following sources (all Web sites functional as of 6/15/16):

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), “Coastal Blue Carbon,” online at http://www.habitat.noaa.gov/coastalbluecarbon.html.

Restore America’s Estuaries, “Blue Carbon Resources,” online at https://www.estuaries.org/bluecarbon-resources.

The Blue Carbon Initiative (a collaboration of Conservation International, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, online at http://thebluecarboninitiative.org/blue-carbon/.

January/February 2014 issue of National Wetlands Newsletter (pp. 5—22) – seven articles examined the concept and current practices.  Of particular relevance to Virginia is “Carbon Sequestration Benefits of Peatland Restoration: Attracting New Partners to Restore National Wildlife Refuge Habitats” (pp. 8-10), which discusses the carbon-storage potential of restoring pocosins and other peatland habitats in the Albemarle Sound-Pamilo Sound watershed in Virginia and North Carolina, including the Dismal Swamp area.  As of May 2016, the newsletter is no longer being published, but archive editions are available online at http://www.wetlandsnewsletter.org/nwn-articles/archive; or contact Environmental Law Institute at 2000 L Street NW, Suite 620, Washington, D.C. 20036; phone (800) 433-5120; e-mail: orders@eli.org.  Back issues of the publication may also be available at your local public or university/college library.
