Coastal Blue Carbon is a term used to describe the climate-change mitigation benefits provided by coastal wetlands (including salt marshes, mangrove swamps, areas of submerged aquatic vegetation, and other habitats).

Of particular relevance to Virginia is “Carbon Sequestration Benefits of Peatland Restoration: Attracting New Partners to Restore National Wildlife Refuge Habitats” (pp. 8-10), which discusses the carbon-storage potential of restoring pocosins and other peatland habitats in the Albemarle Sound-Pamilo Sound watershed in Virginia and North Carolina, including the Dismal Swamp area.
